As with many artists in the vicinity of Kern, his work revolves around the topics of sex, violence and BDSM . Kern was one of the main actors in the so-called Cinema of Transgression .
In the 1990s, Kern concentrated almost exclusively on photography . He became well known with his photo book New York Girls , which puts photo models in connection with bondage and sexual fetishism .
