Richard Kern

Richard Kern (* 1954 in Roanoke Rapids , North Carolina ) is an American Underground - director and photographer from New York .

life and work

Richard Kern graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts .

In the 1980s, it first achieved greater notoriety as part of the thriving underground culture of New York's East Village . Kern shot various films with experimental and erotic content (e.g. The Right Side of My Brain and Fingered ), in which numerous big names in the scene and musicians such as Lydia Lunch and Henry Rollins participated. This is how the first music video of Sonic Youth Death Valley '69 came about in the mid-1980s , which was later followed by other works for bands such as King Missile and Marilyn Manson . As with many artists in the vicinity of Kern, his work revolves around the topics of sex, violence and BDSM . Kern was one of the main actors in the so-called Cinema of Transgression .

In the 1990s, Kern concentrated almost exclusively on photography . He became well known with his photo book New York Girls , which puts photo models in connection with bondage and sexual fetishism .
