The Richardplatz in Berlin district of Neukoelln the district of the same is the central square and village green of the former village Rixdorf that after 1737 German-Rixdorf and Bohemian-Rixdorf was divided. It is located near Karl-Marx-Platz.
Name and location
The square got its name before 1877. It can be traced back to the Richardshof Ordenshof, whose name is probably based on its founder, a Knight Templar named Richard . The Ordenshof was expanded in 1360 by Hermann von Werberg , Grand Master of the Order of St. John and Governor in the Mark Brandenburg , and by Dietrich von Sasar , Commander of the Order of St. John, to the village of Richardsdorp, later Rixdorf.
At Richardplatz and in its immediate vicinity is the oldest building in today's Neukölln, which is the remains of the old Rixdorf. Richardplatz has always been and remained a cultural center of Neukölln. In addition to numerous festivals, the square is a well-known meeting place for its gastronomy, among other things. The traditional and historical Alt-Rixdorf Christmas market, which takes place regularly on the second weekend of Advent, is particularly popular .
Old commercial buildings have been preserved right on the square, such as a forge and a coach rental. The carriage company Schöne, founded in 1894, has been located at Richardplatz 18 since 1910. The carriages and wagons can still be viewed today.
Many people from Neukölln appreciate the traffic-calmed place, primarily because of its originality and quiet, village-like atmosphere.
Buildings
Many of the buildings around Richardplatz have been under monument protection since the 20th century and partially illustrate the original character of the village at that time.
- The Bethlehem Church at Richardplatz 22 was the then Rixdorf village church. It was mentioned for the first time in 1435. It was originally a late medieval , single-nave stone church . In 1639 it burned down during the Thirty Years War and was later rebuilt. Only the base of the nave and the three-sided choir closure have been preserved from their original shape. Renovations in the 18th and 19th centuries changed the church increasingly. During the last major renovation between 1939 and 1941 under Paul Poser and Walter Peschke , the half-timbered sacristy was added, the vestibule was widened and the roof was rebuilt. It also got a new interior. In 1884 it went to the Bohemian Lutheran congregation and from 1912 it received its current name.
- The historic forge at number 28 was listed as a historical monument in 1949. As it was one of the few buildings that was not destroyed in the great fire in 1849, it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Rixdorf. Today it is used as an art forge.
- The five-story residential building Richardplatz 20 at the corner of Zwiestädter Strasse 2 was built in 1902. Like the houses at Richardplatz 1 and 21, which were all built between 1900–1905, it was built in the style of old German eclecticism . The original facade, which has been preserved, shows typical stucco elements , balcony grilles and muntin division of the windows.
- The “Trinkhalle” by Reinhold Kiehl , the architect of the Neukölln town hall (see: List of cultural monuments in Berlin-Neukölln ) and the Stadtbad , which today serves as a snack stand , also deserves a mention .
District management Richardplatz Süd
On September 29, 2005, because of the increasing neglect of the cityscape and social hot spots , the " District Management Richardplatz Süd" started its work. The quarter is bordered by Sonnenallee to the east and Karl-Marx-Straße to the west. The southern boundary is the Saalestrasse and in the north Richardplatz. It covers an area of 44.70 hectares with 11,310 inhabitants.
The aims of the project are above all to improve individual life chances, the integration of foreign residents, the improvement of living conditions and the living situation as well as an expansion of the infrastructure .
