action

Carlo and Giulia Ristuccia have been married for twenty years. Carlo works without any interest in his profession as a financial advisor and dreams of completing his first novel, which has been a fragment in the drawer for years. His wife doesn't like the book. Giulia is a teacher and would like to resume her previous work at the theater, but she lacks the courage to do so. During an argument, Carlo claims that she was no good as an actress anyway. 17-year-old Valentina is determined to have a career in front of the camera, but her mother is against it. Valentina thinks Giulia is just jealous of her own daughter. In a mass casting for a job as a dancer in a TV show, she fails, but is able to make promising contacts. Her 18-year-old brother Paolo fell unhappily in love with a schoolmate, but she ignored him because of his inferiority complexes.

At a class reunion, Carlo meets his childhood sweetheart Alessia again, whom he has not seen for six years. Alessia herself is stuck in an unhappy marriage with two young children. Carlo and Alessia resume their previous relationship. Alessia encourages Carlo to finish his book. Carlo quits the job after an argument with his partner.

When Giulia found out about her husband's affair, it was already the “third crisis” of their marriage according to the way they counted. Giulia had already sought consolation in superficial relationships before, because their fleeting nature made her life with Carlo appear comparatively “worthy”. This time she throws herself rashly at a theater director, not realizing that he is homosexual. She receives a kind rejection but is encouraged to return to work as an actress.

Valentina sleeps her way through to the moderator of that popular game show, the casting of which she couldn't land. She endures humiliation just to get a new chance. Paolo is planning an unforgettable party for his birthday. To do this, he steals money from his parents in order to get enough hashish.

Alessia leaves her husband and takes the children with her. On the phone she asks Carlo to meet him immediately. The phone call leads to an argument and fights between Carlo and Giulia. Chased by his wife, Carlo runs into an approaching car and is seriously injured. Alessia waits in vain for him.

During his convalescence, Carlo is cared for with devotion in Giulia's hospital. After initial difficulties, she also masters her theater role. Valentina convinces the makers of the game show with another audition and gets her first appearance on television. At Paolo's party, most of the visitors and his loved ones leave when the “stuff” runs out. But Paolo gets to know another girl.

Carlo gets well again and returns to his job. While shopping for the next Christmas party, he meets Alessia in a supermarket. She now lives in his neighborhood with her children. Carlo realizes that his own situation has not changed. Shortly before the Christmas presents, he calls Alessia, who is ready to meet again. At the celebration with his family, Carlo only manages to smile for the video camera with difficulty.

Reviews

The New York Times called the film a crude but innovative mix of farce, satire and drama. Ricordati di me is a loud film and the appropriate portrait of a superficial culture in which one has to shout in order to be heard. Nicoletta Romanoff plays the most disturbing role in the film, more or less steals the show from her partners and is absolutely credible "as an Italian post-Britney material girl".
