Riedwihr (German Riedweier ) is a former French commune with 426 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region . It belonged to the arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé and the canton of Colmar-2 .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the former municipalities of Holtzwihr and Riedwihr were merged into a commune nouvelle with the name Porte du Ried .

geography

Riedwihr is located about ten kilometers northeast of Colmar on the banks of the small river Blind .

history

In 1279 the village was called "Rietwilr".

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Riedwihr belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Colmar district in the Upper Alsace district .

Together with the former neighboring communities of Bischwihr , Holtzwihr and Wickerschwihr , Riedwihr maintained a friendly relationship with the German community of Bahlingen am Kaiserstuhl .
