Rieth is a district of the municipality of Luckow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . An independent municipality until December 31, 1997, Rieth is today the northernmost German border town to the Republic of Poland on the mainland.

Rieth is located on the south bank of the Neuwarper See , opposite the island of Riether Werder .

history

Rieth was first mentioned in a document in 1252 when the Pomeranian Duke Barnim I donated the area to the Eldena monastery. The village and the estate were owned by Nikolaus Bröker (from 1317). At the beginning of the 14th century, the family acquired fiefs on the Haff coast, including Rieth, Vogelsang, Warsin , Bellin , Luckow, Mönkeberg, Albrechtshof and later Lebehn and Nadrensee . The property was then u. a. owned by the Swedish major Hinrich Anderson and Erben (from around 1648), the Bröker families (from 1690), von Bülow (from 1802) and Jaffe (from 1872). The manor house dates from 1841.

After the Thirty Years' War , the destroyed Riether Church was rebuilt as a brick building with a half-timbered bell tower by the von Bröcker family; it was restored in 1731. The area came to Prussia from Sweden in 1720 . At the end of the 18th century, an economic boom slowly began. In addition to agriculture and shipping, there were fishermen, blacksmiths and gardeners in Rieth. A dairy, brewery and sawmill were added until the 1930s. The estate had bought up (around the turn of the century?) Prussia. Until 1945 the state forest ranger was housed in the manor house. During the GDR era “Schloss Rieth” was a popular holiday property. Today it is used as an academy, foundation and school camp.

When the border was drawn after the Second World War , the town lost its connection to what is now the Polish area and the Pomeranian capital, Szczecin , as the Rieth – Szczecin railway was largely dismantled.

Infrastructure, miscellaneous

Due to the location, the place lost inhabitants after the Second World War. Tourism developed positively, especially thanks to nature lovers. An orchid meadow under strict protection lies directly on the Polish border.

At Rieth leads Teufelsgraben over, which was created 200 years ago to the four kilometers from Neuwarper See remote Ahlbecker lake to drain. This former lake ( called Seegrund ) is now a wet meadow that is under nature protection.

Rieth can be reached via the only road from Ahlbeck .

For the film Großstadtklein , some scenes were shot in Rieth.
