Johann Rihosek
Johann Rihosek (born June 5, 1869 in Maków Podhalański , Galicia , † November 21, 1956 in Vienna ) was an Austrian engineer and locomotive designer.
Life
Rihosek attended secondary school in Olomouc and then studied mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology . In 1893 he took up his position as a designer in the Floridsdorf locomotive factory in Vienna . From 1897 he worked in the department for locomotives and wagons in the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Railways , which was headed by Karl Gölsdorf . After Gölsdorf's death in 1916, Rihosek was his successor.
The First World War and its aftermath placed high demands on Rihosek, as a lack of material led to problems in vehicle construction. After the division of the locomotive fleet to the successor states of the monarchy , a replacement had to be created. This is how the series BBÖ 270 , BBÖ 81 and BBÖ 82 were created . Rihosek made particular contributions to the further development of railway brakes . He preferred the air brake. During the development he worked with Gebrüder Hardy AG , on whose supervisory board he sat until his death. He also developed a spark arrester for steam locomotives and the exhaust gas preheater .
In 1924 Rihosek left the ministry as head of section (since 1923 Federal Ministry of Trade and Transport ) and in October of that year he became an honorary lecturer at the chair for locomotive construction at the Vienna University of Technology, which had been vacant since the death of Rudolf Sanzin (1874–1922) . There he became an associate professor in 1936 and received an honorary doctorate in 1944 .
He wrote numerous articles in the journals Organ for Progress of the Railway System , the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects , Die Lokomotive und Eisenbahn .
Johann Rihosek was buried for the last rest on November 29, 1956 in the Grinzing cemetery (group 32 / row 5 / no. 25); Rihosekgasse was named in his honor in 1967 in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district of Vienna) .
