Roman rituals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rituale Romanum is the liturgical book of celebrations according to the Roman rite of the Catholic Church , which is usually presided over by a cleric . It contains the liturgical acts that are not described in the missal , pontifical or breviary . In the ritual there are liturgical forms for baptism , marriage , anointing of the sick and for visiting the sick. Also included are the accident or the Viatikum , the sacrament of penance , the Roman funeral rite and exorcisms . An important part of the Roman ritual are the benedictions .

history

The first editions of the book type “Rituals” were published on 11/12. Century, when texts from the episcopal pontifical were excerpted for such rites that could also be performed by the priest. Only a few editions of these handwritten collections of rites have survived that have been given different names such as agenda , manuals , obsequiale , sacerdotale , pastorale or agenda sive rituals . In addition to basic texts for baptism, anointing of the sick, marriage, funeral and benedictions, they also received special goods from the diocese or the monastery or order in which they were created.

The printing press facilitated the production of standardized and uniform Ritualia in Italy about the Sacerdotale Roman , released from the 1497th The Council of Trent (1545–1563) wanted a uniform collection of texts for the whole Church. The first official edition of the Rituale Romanum , the Rituale Romanum Pauli Quinti Pontifici Maximi Iussu editum , then appeared in 1614 under Pope Paul V and reflected the Tridentine Rite ; it is accessible today in the Monumenta Liturgica Concilii Tridentini . The Roman ritual was used in this form for a long time, but never generally prescribed. This is why the German-speaking dioceses largely used their own ritual books until the 20th century, which showed considerable deviations from the Roman form, especially with regard to the wedding ceremony and the funeral rite. The Rituale Romanum experienced some revisions and new editions (additions in 1752 and 1884, a new edition in 1913). In 1925 the Vatican presented a new edition "which was carefully revised, improved and increased in accordance with the Codex Iuris Canonici , the rubrics of the Roman Missal and the decrees of the Apostolic See". In 1952 the last edition of the revised Rituale Romanum appeared .

The oldest translation of the Rituale Romanum for worship in a modern vernacular is the Croatian edition published in Rome in 1640 under Urban VIII (see also Bartol Kašić ).

Roman rituals after the Second Vatican Council

As part of the general reform of the liturgy decided by Vatican II , the partial volumes of the Renewed Roman Rituals , which deal with the individual celebrations, were gradually published . Their translation into the vernacular in which the renewal of Catholic liturgy is celebrated usually done by the individual Episcopal Conferences used theologian commissions and in turn each in turn authorized papal. For almost all sacramental celebrations - this includes sacraments and sacramentals  - authentic German-language versions have now been published, in a number of individual volumes in contrast to the Roman Rituals without a common title. The German titles usually begin with Die Feier ... , e.g. B. The celebration of infant baptism . But also the book Communion giving and Eucharist adoration outside of the Mass and a Benediction are part of the German-language inventory of the Roman Ritual .

Latin and German editions contain preliminary liturgical and theological remarks in addition to the respective order of worship. The so-called pastoral introduction provides information on theology and practice of the celebration and is also of legal nature.
