The Riu de la Sénia ( Catalan , formerly also known as Riu d'Ulldecona ; Spanish : Río Cenia ) is a 49 kilometers long river in the Spanish provinces of Castellón and Tarragona . On the largest stretch of its course, it forms the border between the two provinces or between the regions of Valencia and Catalonia .
course
Its source is 1200 meters high in the mountains of the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit in the municipality of La Pobla de Benifassà in the Comarca Maestrazgo .
Its waters are then dammed up at 477 meters in the Ulldecona dam, still in the municipality of Puebla de Benifasar. With an area of 116 hectares and a capacity of 11 million m³, this reservoir is the only regulation of the river and is used for irrigation.
From the reservoir, the river runs through passages with a great gradient, which leads to a strong oxygenation, and very lush vegetation and habitat for many fish. Later, before arriving at La Sénia, in the Comarca of Montsià , there are branches for irrigation, which in this area reaches 2360 hectares.
Shortly before La Sénia (the village belongs to the province of Tarragona) the river reaches the border between Catalonia and Valencia, from then on to its mouth it forms the border between these two regions.
From this point on, the Sénio receives practically no more natural inflows and the water quality deteriorates considerably.
Near the town of Alcanar it enters the plain of Vinaròs , which it crosses until it flows into the Mediterranean.
