The residential building with office space at Robert-Koch-Strasse 18 , also known as " Franke-Wohnhaus ", was built by the architect Josef Franke for himself and his family in Gelsenkirchen's old town in 1909 and 1910. It is one of Franke's early buildings and was able to be preserved after war damage. It is still owned by the family today and is a listed building .

history

In 1904, Josef Franke went into business for himself as an architect in Gelsenkirchen. As one of the first buildings in Gelsenkirchen, he designed and built two residential buildings with offices and small gardens in Robert-Koch-Straße 18/20 between 1909 and 1910. These formed a structural unit, the western part at number 20 was for the merchant Franz Jansen and stylistically similar to the eastern house that Franke moved with his family and set up his architectural office there. In the following years he designed numerous important buildings of supraregional importance in Gelsenkirchen, which today make him one of the most important architects of the Ruhr area in the 20th century. During the Third Reich , Josef Franke received only a few orders, but continued to make designs in his office. He died on January 16, 1944.

On November 6, 1944, the house at Robert-Koch-Strasse 20 was hit by a bomb during the Second World War . Due to the shared roof, the fire also spread to the Franke house, which was still inhabited by his family. Both buildings suffered severe damage. The western house could not be rebuilt. In the Franke house, the wooden interior as well as the upper floor and the roof were destroyed. Furthermore, the extinguishing water destroyed a large part of the plans and notes from the archives of the architect, around 700 sheets could be saved. The upper floor was not restored and replaced with a new attic.

On March 25, 1982, the Franke house was the second building in Gelsenkirchen to be listed as a historical monument. Accordingly, it is registered as an architectural monument under number 2 in the list of monuments of the city of Gelsenkirchen .

Until her death in 2011, the artist Margarete Franke , a daughter of Josef Franke, lived in the house, which his grandson Thomas Franke, also an architect, inherited. In cooperation with the architect Michael Naß, the building was renovated in accordance with a listed building. The work, during which the house was completely refurbished and the garden was modeled based on the original design by Josef Franke, took two and a half years. They ended in June 2014. In addition to a rented loft apartment, there is now a law firm and a counseling center in the office and living space of the house.

description

The building was built in brick . It is two-story and three-axis . The pan-roofed gable roof is characterized by a dormer per axis and replaced the destroyed second floor after the Second World War. The street facade is elaborately designed. It is characterized by an irregular alternation of plaster and brick surfaces. In the two left axes, the lavishly designed entrance loggia dominates with a curved staircase leading to the set-back, arched entrance door on the upper floor. The staircase is protected in the left axis on the ground floor by a wall facing the street. In this there is a flat door as well as the saying "Stand firmly my house in world brew" in stone . The right axis of the building has Trumeau windows in ashlar on the ground floor and a slightly protruding polygonal bay on the upper floor . The facade is decorated with several stone reliefs on a rectangular floor plan, showing, among other things, putti . In the building there is a dark stone floor in the long hall , the original of which was preserved in 1909.
