Robert Charles Morlino (born December 31, 1946 in Scranton , Pennsylvania , † November 24, 2018 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Madison .

Life

Robert Charles Morlino joined the religious community of the Jesuits and was ordained a priest on June 1, 1974 . He left the order and was incardinated on October 26, 1983 in the clergy of the diocese of Kalamazoo .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Helena on July 6, 1999 . The Apostolic Nuncio in the United States of America , Gabriel Montalvo Higuera , donated him episcopal ordination on September 21 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Paul Vincent Donovan , Former Bishop of Kalamazoo, and John George Vlazny , Archbishop of Portland, Oregon .

He was appointed Bishop of Madison by John Paul II on May 23, 2003, and he was instituted on August 1 of the same year.

A great challenge for Morlino and his diocese was the loss of the 150-year-old Bishop's Church of St. Raphael's Cathedral , which is also the parish church of the cathedral parish of the same name, which was destroyed on March 14, 2005 by a fire that an apparently mentally unstable arsonist had set down on the foundation walls was destroyed. Morlino had to decide whether the cathedral should be rebuilt at the previous location or a new episcopal church should be built at an alternative location in Madison. In June 2007, Morlino announced that St. Raphael's Cathedral would be rebuilt in its old location, with the remaining tower and other remains of the old church being re-used. In 2008, after the loss of their church, the cathedral parish was merged with two neighboring parishes to form the new cathedral parish of St. Raphael. In the same year the demolition of the ruin began; the tower was also demolished. The plans for a new building, which, according to the initial plans, should offer space for around 1000 believers, ultimately did not materialize. A publicly accessible Way of the Cross has been on the property since 2013 .

Morlino passed away on November 24, 2018 after being admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in Madison the previous day with heart problems.
