William Henry Bullock

William Henry Bullock (born April 13, 1927 in Maple Lake , Wright County , Minnesota , † April 3, 2011 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Madison .

Life

Bullock served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 . From 1946 to 1948 he studied philosophy at the University of Notre Dame and from 1948 to 1952 Catholic theology at the St. Paul Seminary . He was ordained a priest on June 7, 1952 in St. Paul's Cathedral in Saint Paul . He served in parishes in Minneapolis and Edina from 1952 to 1957 . From 1957 Bullock worked at the St. Thomas Academy in St. Paul, there from 1967 to 1971 as rector. In 1962 he earned a master's degree in liturgy and religious instruction from the University of Notre Dame. In 1969 he received his doctorate in administrative sciences from the University of St. Thomas . From 1971 to 1980 he was pastor in Excelsior and in 1980 in Minneapolis.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Natchesium and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul on June 3, 1980 . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop John Roach Robert on August 12, 1980 in St. Paul's Cathedral in Saint Paul; Co- consecrators were Paul Vincent Dudley , Bishop of Sioux Falls and Raymond Alphonse Lucker , Bishop of New Ulm .

In 1987 Bullock was named Bishop of Des Moines , and in 1993 Bishop of Madison . In 2003 Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation.

At the United States Bishops' Conference , Bullock was a member of the Commissions for Communication and Evangelism and the Agenda Commission for preparing general meetings of the conference. He served on the board of trustees of St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee.

Bullock was a member of the Knights of Columbus (fourth degree) and prior of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He was honored with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from Saint Ambrose University in 1989 and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of St. Thomas in 2005 .
