Robert Charles Smith

Robert Charles "Pinky" Smith (born December 13,  1951 in Shreveport , † February 10, 2009 in Jacksonville ) was an American basketball player .

career

Smith played in his home country at Jefferson High School in Daly City , California, and then at the University of San Diego . He led San Diego's team in the 1972/73 season in the statistical categories points per game (17.9) and rebounds per game (10.4).

The two-meter-long center player moved to Germany for SSV Hagen and was part of the SSV squad in the basketball league between 1974 and 1977 . In the 1974/75 season, due to the foreigner restrictions in the Bundesliga, he was initially to be used in the European Cup of National Champions and in the second men's team. Since his compatriot Jimmy Wilkins was injured, Smith stood in the cup final in 1975 on the field and won the competition with the SSV. In the 1975/76 season he was the most successful offensive player in the Bundesliga main round with 485 points. During his time in Hagen, the American worked alongside his basketball work as a social worker, as a trainer in the youth sector and on the women's team at TGH Wetter. Smith later played at TSV Hagen 1860 (1977-1980), in Aachen and at VfL Bochum .

In 1983 he had to end his career due to an injury. He then completed a degree at the Kirkland Church of Christ in Washington State and returned to Germany in 1986. He lived as a preacher of the Church of Christ for three years in Aachen and four in Kiel and was active in the same activity in the Seychelles from 1994 onwards . From 2006 he worked as a preacher in Darmstadt for one year .

In 2007 Smith moved to Jacksonville , Florida , where he suffered cardiac arrest and died in February 2009.
