Robert Durrer (born July 24, 1836 in Stans ; † December 4, 1889 ibid) was a Swiss lawyer and politician .

Life and work

The son of Kirchmeiers Anton Albert Durrer attended the Kapuzinergymnasium Kollegium St. Fidelis in Stans and the Stiftsschule Maria Einsiedeln from 1847 to 1854 and in 1854, to learn better French, the Jesuit school in Porrentruy .

He studied philosophy at the Jesuit college in Dole in France. When cholera broke out there, he continued his studies in Freiburg and St. Gallen . He then studied law at the universities of Munich and Göttingen . In Göttingen he joined the Hannovera fraternity in 1856 . From here he went on an educational trip to Hamburg and the German North Sea coast. He returned to Munich again and graduated there in 1858.

He completed a legal internship with National Councilor Johann Joseph Müller in St. Gallen before setting up as a lawyer in Stans. Soon afterwards he was a member of the local council , where he was responsible for schooling and the poor. It was thanks to his work that Stans received a new orphanage. In 1862 he became a member of the district administrator of the canton of Nidwalden . This body elected him President of the Police Court. After his father's death, he was given the post of Kirchmeier, a high honorary administrative post of the Catholic parish in Stans. In 1868 he was appointed governor (defense minister of the canton of Nidwalden). As such, he took part in the internment of French soldiers of the Bourbaki army in Stans in 1871 . After the Federal Council had elected him as federal sub-archivist in 1872 , he entered the federal service. However, the job in Bern did not fill him. So he soon went back to Stans. In 1874 the district administrator elected him as police director. When his brother-in-law, the previous National Councilor, died in 1874, he successfully ran for his successor and was a member of the Catholic-Conservative parliamentary group of the National Council for 15 years until his death. There he primarily advocated the improvement of economic interests in rural areas of Switzerland.

His worldview, which was shaped by Catholicism, came e.g. B. expressed by the fact that he - albeit unsuccessfully - spoke out against the introduction of civil marriage or wanted to prevent young women who do not belong to any church order from taking up the profession of nurse . In 1875 Robert Durrer was elected Landammann (District President) of the Canton of Nidwalden. He held this office until his death, but only eight times, since according to the constitutional provisions he had to swap this function with the office of governor (deputy regional president) every second year . At the cantonal level, he was responsible for the amendment to the constitution in 1877. He also ensured a revision of the school law, which led to a significant improvement in the school system in the canton of Nidwalden.

His son Robert Durrer became an art historian, archivist and canton judge.
