Robert Gerald Livingston

Robert Gerald Livingston (born November 17, 1927 in New York City ) is an American diplomat and author .

Livingston was President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and Founding Director of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies . Livingston is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC He lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Livingston studied at Harvard University until 1953 and worked from 1956 to 1974 as Foreign Service Officer of the US State Department in Salzburg , Hamburg , Belgrade , Berlin , Bonn and Washington, DC . During this time , he also received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1959 and from 1970 to 1972 he was a visiting fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations in a study group on the GDR . 1972/1973 Livingston was then on the staff of the National Security Council under Henry Kissinger . In 1974 he became Vice President of the German Marshall Fund and in 1977 its President. He held the position of president until 1981.

From 1981 to 1983 Livingston was then Research Professor at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University . During this time he wrote a book on the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1983 he founded the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University . He held this position until 1994. He was then Chief Development Officer of the institute until 1996 . In 1997 he became a Senior Visiting Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington DC .

In the course of his life, Livingston was the author of more than 300 articles and contributions in the German ( Spiegel , Wirtschaftswoche , Zeit , Deutschlandradio ) and US ( New York Times , Washington Post , Foreign Policy ) media, especially on German-American relations .
