Robert Lionel Archibald Goff, Baron Goff of Chieveley , PC , FBA ( November 12, 1926 - August 14, 2016 ) was a British judge and life peer .

life and career

Goff received his education at Eton College before he began studying at New College , which he graduated with a Magister Artium in 1953 and where he received his doctorate in 1972.

Goff served in the Scots Guards from 1945 to 1948 .

At Lincoln College of University of Oxford , he was from 1951 to 1955 Fellow and Tutor. In 1951 he was admitted to the bar by the Inner Temple Chamber . In 1975 he became a bencher there . Goff became Crown Attorney in 1967 .

From 1974 to 1975 he was a recorder of the Crown Court , and from 1975 to 1982 judge of the High Court of Justice . From 1979 to 1981 he was a judge of the Commercial List and President ( Chairman ) of the Commercial Court Committee . From 1982 to 1985 he was Lord Justice of Appeal .

From 1980 to 1981 he was an Honorary Professor of Legal Ethics at the University of Birmingham . In 1983 he was a Maccabaean Lecturer and in 1987 Lionel Cohen Lecturer in Jerusalem , and in 1993 Cassell Lecturer in Stockholm . Goff was from 1976 to 1982 Chairman of the Board of Directors ( Council ) of Legal Education and from 1986 to 1991 at the Court of the University of London .

At the British Institute of International and Comparative Law , he was chairman from 1986 to 2001 and president since 2001. From 1990 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law . From 1986 to 1991, Goff was President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators . In 1986 he was President of the Bentham Club . From 1986 to 1987 he was at the Holdsworth Club . At the University of Oxford he was high steward from 1990 to 2001 .

Membership in the House of Lords

Goff became Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1986 and remained so until 1996, at the same time he became a life peer as Baron Goff of Chieveley in the County of Berkshire . He then became Senior Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1996 until he retired in 1998.

His attendance at meeting days was in the irregular double-digit range at the end of the 1990s and fell even further after the turn of the millennium. He was last present in the 2004/2005 session.

Since May 25, 2010 he was on leave of absence granted by the House of Lords .

Honors

Goff was the holder of several honorary doctorates . The City University London and the University of Reading honored him with an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt) . He was awarded an honorary doctorate in law (Hon LLD) from the University of Buckingham , the University of London and the University of Bristol .

He has been an Honorary Fellow of Lincoln College since 1983, New College since 1986 and Wolfson College since 2001. In 1987 he became a Fellow of the British Academy .

Goff was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, First Class , for his contribution to British awareness of German law .

family

Goff comes from the family of Barons Davis-Goff, was born the second child of Lionel Trevor Davis-Goff and his wife Isobel Denroche-Smith and had an older sister. He has been married to Sarah Cousins ​​since 1953, with whom he has two sons and two daughters. One of the sons has already passed away.

He died on August 14, 2016.
