Creation of the figure
The character "Robert Langdon" was created by Dan Brown as a fictional alter ego or as "the man he wishes he could be" ("the man he wishes he could be"). Like Dan Brown , Robert Langdon was born on June 22nd, 1964 in Exeter , New Hampshire . Langdon is also said to have attended Phillips Exeter Academy just like Brown . Robert Langdon is named after the American graphic designer , ambigram artist , painter and writer John Langdon and, like him, is fascinated by ambigrams: Ambigrams can already be found on the cover of the first edition of Brown's novel "Illuminati" and they appear again and again throughout the book Ambigrams, which are interpreted by Langdon. John Langdon also created the logo for the fictional Zurich custodian bank that appeared in the film adaptation "The Da Vinci Code".

Langdon has astonishing encyclopedic and academic knowledge in the fields of mysticism , occult societies, and art history. Symbols and ambigrams are just as much a part of his area of expertise as the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri . His eidetic memory is also addressed in the books . He always wears a watch with a picture of Mickey Mouse . This reminds him to laugh more often and not to take university life so seriously.
