Robert Mehlhart

Robert Mehlhart OP (born April 25, 1982 in Trostberg ( Chiemgau )) is a German church musician , musicologist and Roman Catholic religious priest in the Dominican order . Since 2012 he has been the choir director of the vocal band of the Theatinerkirche in Munich . Since 2018 he has been Vice President of the General Cäcilienverband and teaches at the University of Music and Theater in Munich .

Life

Robert Mehlhart received his basic training from the Regensburger Domspatzen . In 2000 he received a scholarship from the International Richard Wagner Foundation. After joining the Dominican order , he studied theology , church music and musicology in Vienna and Oxford .

At the Dominican Church in Vienna he founded the Vienna Student Choir and the chamber music series Wiener Kreuzgangkonzerte.

After completing his doctorate on Gregorian chant and artistic studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , he took over the leadership of church music at the Theatinerkirche in Munich and its various ensembles in 2012 .

Mehlhart directed the world premiere of Missa Magister Bone by the British composer Alexander Campkin as well as several German premieres (by Vladimir Martynov , James Mc Millan, among others ). A teaching position at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich as well as public workshops in the field of Gregorian chant complement his artistic work.
