Robert Naumann (Emil Wilhelm Robert Naumann; born December 3, 1809 in Leipzig ; † August 31, 1880 ibid) was a German high school teacher and librarian .

Life

Naumann was the son of master tailor Johann Gottfried Naumann and his wife Johanna Christiane, nee. Lochmann. In 1827 he passed the Abitur at the Nikolai-Gymnasium in Leipzig , then he studied theology and classical philology at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1830 . Also in 1830 he was employed as an observer at the Leipzig Council Library. In 1832 Naumann passed the "theological candidate examination", in 1833 he became a catechist at the St. Peter's Church in Leipzig . Finally, in 1835, he switched to the Nikolai Gymnasium as a teacher of ancient languages, history, geography and religion, where he worked until 1876. Also in 1835 he was appointed sub-librarian of the council library.

In this part-time position he achieved particular merits by organizing the library, cataloging numerous volumes and increasing the holdings from 37,000 to 100,000 volumes in his almost fifty-year tenure. His most important act was the preparation of the manuscript catalog, the "Catalogus librorum manuscriptorum ..." (Naumann catalog). Together with the Leipzig publisher Theodor Oswald Weigel, he published the magazine " Serapeum : Journal for Library Science, Handwriting and Older Literature", which appeared from 1840 to 1870. It was the first specialist library science journal in Germany. Between 1855 and 1860, Naumann and Rudolf Weigel also published the magazine “Archive for the Drawing Arts”.

Naumann was a member of the Leipzig Johannisloge Balduin zur Linde . His estate is in the Leipzig University Library .
