Robert Selden Garnett (born December 16, 1819 in Essex County , Virginia , † July 13, 1861 at Corrick's Ford, Virginia) was an officer in the US Army and Brigadier General of the Confederate States of America in the Civil War .

Life

Garnett was born on the Rose Hill manor in Essex County in 1819 . His cousin was Richard Brooke Garnett , also a later Confederate general. After normal schooling, he attended the Military Academy in West Point , New York , which he successfully completed in 1841. He then served as a lieutenant in the 4th US Artillery Regiment and was stationed on the northern border for the first year before he was transferred to Fort Monroe , Virginia. During the Mexican-American War 1846–1848, he served under General Zachary Taylor , later 12th President of the United States , and was recognized for bravery in both the Battle of Monterrey , May 21-23. September 1846 and in the Battle of Buena Vista on February 23, 1847.

In 1848 Garnett was transferred to the 7th US Infantry Regiment and fought in the 3rd Seminole War in Florida before being transferred to Monterey , California and then to Texas , where he was promoted to captain . Further stations in his military career were instructors at Westpoint and company commander in the 1st US Cavalry Regiment before he became a major in the 9th US Infantry Regiment in the Washington Territory .

When Virginia turned against the states as part of the secession , Garnett resigned his service in April 1861 and became adjutant general of the Virginia Army, served under the command of General Robert Edward Lee and was promoted to brigadier general in June of the same year. He was wounded in the Battle of Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861 and died as a result on July 13.
