Robert Schäfer (born March 23, 1976 in Darmstadt ) is a German football functional . From March 22, 2016 to April 15, 2019, he was CEO of Fortuna Düsseldorf .

Life

Schäfer grew up near Braunschweig and completed a legal education as a fully qualified lawyer at the Universities of Trier and Münster as well as at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court . After passing the first legal exam, he did an internship at a sports marketing company .

He began his professional career in Munich as a project manager for the International Management Group . As such, from 2005 to 2010, among other things, he was commissioned to market TSV 1860 Munich . From November 15, 2010 to September 27, 2013, he was the successor to Robert Niemann, managing director of this association. To avert insolvency, TSV 1860 Munich, under its president Dieter Schneider , signed a cooperation agreement with the Jordanian sports investor Hasan Ismaik on May 30, 2011 . When differences of opinion arose with the club's management and management - for example on the question of extending the contract for trainer Alexander Schmidt and sports director Florian Hinterberger - this investor pushed for Schäfer's replacement. Due to the 50 + 1 rule and the provisions of the cooperation agreement, however, he was unable to prevail, so Schäfer's employment contract was extended at the end of May 2013. Only a dispute with the later club president Gerhard Mayrhofer and a subsequent amicable settlement led to Schäfer's withdrawal in September 2013.

From May 8, 2014 to March 21, 2016, Schäfer was Commercial Director of Dynamo Dresden . In this function he was responsible for the financial restructuring of the highly indebted association. Schäfer then took over the chairmanship of the board of Fortuna Düsseldorf as successor to Dirk Kall . On September 1, 2016, he also took up the position of a member of the supervisory board of the German Football League . In addition, he represents the German Football League on the board of the German Football Association .

On April 13, 2019, Fortuna Düsseldorf announced that it wanted to part with Schäfer, to whom the association was contractually bound until June 30, 2021, because the relationship of trust was "permanently disrupted". There had been anger in advance because Schäfer had announced the replacement of the successful coach Friedhelm Funkel at the end of the 2019 season "almost single-handedly" in January 2019, but this was soon reversed after protests by the fans with a contract extension with Funkel. On April 15, 2019, he was dismissed from his position on the Executive Board by the Supervisory Board.

Schäfer is married, has a son who was born in Düsseldorf and lives in Düsseldorf- Oberkassel .
