Robert H. Serry (* 1950 in Calcutta ) is a Dutch diplomat and former ambassador to Ireland and Ukraine .

Life

Serry studied political science at the University of Amsterdam and then worked as a diplomat in Bangkok , Moscow and New York (at the United Nations ).

From 1986 to 1992 he headed the 'Midden-Oosten' department in the Dutch Foreign Ministry (at that time the cabinet ruled under Ruud Lubbers , see also the list of Dutch foreign ministers ). Together with Max van der Stoel , Serry operated "quiet diplomacy" between Israel and the Palestinians. In 1991, when he was part of the rolling Dutch Presidency of the EU, he was involved in developments that led to the Madrid Conference in November 1991 .

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , he was the first Dutch ambassador to Ukraine from 1992 to 1996 and worked as a crisis manager at NATO from 1996 to 2005 . Serry ran on the list of the Dutch Partij van de Arbeid in the Dutch parliamentary elections in November 2006 at number 48; but the list did not move to this place.

On November 29, 2007, Serry became the new UN envoy for the Middle East. He is Senior Adviser to General Secretary Ban Ki-moon . He also represents the UN in the Middle East Quartet (EU, USA, Russia and UN), which is supposed to promote peace in this region.

At Easter 2014 Serry campaigned for the rights of Christian Palestinians. The Israeli foreign ministry then accused him of "poor judgment".

On March 1, 2014, the UN announced that Serry had ended a trip to Ukraine with no results. On March 4, 2014, he arrived there again. During a visit to the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea on March 5, 2014, he was threatened by pro-Russian gunmen and forced to return to his hotel, said UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson .
