Robert Zimmermann (painter)

August Robert Zimmermann (born April 21, 1818 in Zittau ; † June 6, 1864 in Munich ) was a German draftsman , lithographer and landscape painter .

Life

He was the younger brother of the painters Albert and Max and the older brother of Richard Zimmermann .

His father was the Zittau town musician Karl Friedrich August Zimmermann (in office 1807-1830), from whom all sons received the second name August. Like his siblings, Robert first received musical training from his father; he became a pianist and aspired to a stage career. Thanks to the suggestion of his older brother Max, Richard first turned to drawing and lithography , but then followed the oldest to Munich at his painting school and had been a successful landscape artist since 1846.

He found his rural motifs mainly in Tyrol and old Bavaria . The circle of painters around Albert and his three younger brothers was so strongly influenced by them that one spoke only of the "carpenters" . Although he died relatively early compared to his siblings, he was as effective as theirs during their lifetime and had a wide range of buyers; so was z. B. auctioned his painting of a barn from 1854 under the title Barn interior at Sotheby’s in Melbourne (!). Works by Robert Zimmermann are among others. a. in painting collections in Dresden , Leipzig and Bautzen .
