Roberta Metsola (born 18 January 1979 in San Ġiljan ) is a Maltese politician from the Partit Nazzjonalista . She has been a Member of the European Parliament since April 2013 and President of the European Parliament since January 18, 2022 . She had previously been the First Vice-President of the European Parliament since November 2020 .

Life

Metsola earned a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Malta and a Magister Artium from the College of Europe in Bruges . During her student days she was General Secretary of the European Democrat Students . She worked as an attachée for justice and home affairs at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union and as a legal adviser at the European External Action Service . After two unsuccessful candidacies for the European Parliament in 2004 and 2009, she replaced Simon Busuttil on April 25, 2013to Parliament. She was re-elected to the European Parliament in the 2014 and 2019 European elections.

In November 2020, Metsola became the first vice-president of the European Parliament. She succeeded Mairead McGuinness , who had moved to the European Commission . Metsola was the first MP from Malta to be elected Vice-President. In December 2021, the Group of the European People's Party nominated Metsola as a candidate for the post of President of the European Parliament . She was to succeed David Sassoli , who, according to an agreement between the EPP and the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament , was to hand over the office to a Conservative politician for the remainder of the legislative period after two and a half years.

After Sassoli's death on January 11, 2022, Metsola took over the office of President of the European Parliament as its first Vice-President, acting until the planned election in the second half of January. Metsola is the third woman to hold the position, after Simone Veil and Nicole Fontaine . On January 18, 2022, the European Parliament elected her as the regular successor to the late Sassoli.
