Roberto Montenegro Nervo (born February 19, 1887 in Guadalajara , † October 13, 1968 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican artist.

biography

Montenegro was born in Guadalajara , the son of Colonel Ignacio Montenegro and his wife María Nervo , the aunt of the poet Amado Nervo . From 1904 to 1905 he studied at his birthplace, from 1906 at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City, where he also made the acquaintance of the academy-associated artists Diego Rivera , Jorge Enciso and Juan Tablada . In the same year he received a state scholarship and at the end of the year went to Europe, where he studied painting for two years in Paris and also participated in exhibitions. During this time he also traveled to London and Italy. In Mexico, where the revolution began in 1910 , he joined the artist group founded by Gerald Murillo in his hometown . Back in Europe in 1913, he assisted Rubén Darío at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts , but went to Mallorca with Antonio de la Gandara during the First World War , where he also worked on some murals in public buildings. From 1917 he exhibited his works in Barcelona , Madrid and London before he returned to Mexico in 1919 and from 1920 worked on the design of Mexico's national theater. He was friends with José Vasconcelos , through whose work he was influenced. He became head of the sculpture department of the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) and founded the first pop art museum in Mexico City . In 1922 he designed the Mexican pavilion in the “Centenario de la Independencia de Brasil” in Rio de Janeiro . In the same year he organized the "Fiesta de la Santa Cruz" for the first time in the recently closed, ancient library Colegio Máximo de San Pedro y San Pablo . Until 1933 he worked on a large number of well-known murals and pictures. In 1934 he became director of the Museo de Artes Populares de Bellas Artes . He also worked as a set designer , exhibition organizer, founded other museums, published his pictures and made other well-known murals. In the last year of his life he was one of the founding members of the Academia de Artes .
