Roberto "Pupo" Moreno (born February 11, 1959 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian racing car driver .

Career

Nelson Piquet's childhood friend took part in training for a Formula 1 Grand Prix as a driver 75 times between 1982 and 1995 . However, he only qualified 42 times for participation in a Grand Prix. Moreno drove in Formula 1 for Lotus , AGS , Coloni , EuroBrun , Benetton , Jordan , Minardi , Andrea Moda and Forti and won 15 championship points.

The relatively long Formula 1 career was repeatedly interrupted by long breaks. Many team bosses saw Moreno as just a substitute who could temporarily replace a failed regular driver. Already on his Formula 1 debut in Zandvoort in 1982 he represented the injured Nigel Mansell in the Lotus , but missed qualifying for the race two seconds behind.

In 1987 he took part in two races for the AGS team. In the last race of the season on the Adelaide Street Circuit , he finished a sensational sixth. In 1988 Moreno won the International Formula 3000 Championship on a Reynard - Cosworth . In 1989 Moreno returned to Formula 1. With the Coloni he piloted this season, however, he qualified only four times in 16 world championship races and was eliminated early in all races.

In 1990 Moreno drove the first 14 races of the season for EuroBrun Racing ; But again qualified for only two races. In the races for the Japanese and Australian Grand Prix, he represented Alessandro Nannini , who was injured in a helicopter crash , in the Benetton team , finishing second behind Piquet in Japan. In Australia he finished seventh. In 1991 Moreno drove the first eleven races of the season for Benetton and was replaced by Michael Schumacher in Monza . He drove the next two races for Jordan and the last for Minardi.

Moreno has been driving in the Champ Car series (USA) since 1996 . Moreno started for eleven teams in 118 races and won two races. In America, Moreno earned himself the nickname “Supersub” - in German something like “Super-Ersatz”. He is said to be able to start with any team, with any car and on any track without much advance notice.

Today Moreno lives in Fort Lauderdale , Florida.
