Robin Rathmore Plunket, 8th Baron Plunket (born December 3, 1925 - November 16, 2013 ) was a British peer and politician .

Life

Plunket was born the younger son of Terence Plunket, 6th Baron Plunket (1899-1938) and his wife Dorothy Mabel Lewis (1900-1938). His parents died together in a plane crash in California , United States , in February 1938 . He was baptized on February 1, 1926 at St Savior's Church on Walton Street, London . His godmother was the then Duchess of York (HRH) Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon , the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth II ; she was represented at the ceremony by Mabell Ogilvy, Countess of Airlie .

Plunket's older brother Patrick Plunket, 7th Baron Plunket (1923-1975) was from 1954 until his death under Queen Elizabeth II Deputy Master of the Household in the Queen's Royal Household . Robin Rathmore Plunket inherited the title of Baron Plunket (created 1827) in the Peerage of the United Kingdom after the death of his older brother on May 28, 1975 . His older brother was unmarried, had no heir and died of cancer .

He attended Eton College and served during World War II . He was stationed with the rank of captain in the Rifle Brigade from 1943 to 1947 .

He lived as a farmer in Zimbabwe for over 40 years since the 1950s . He lived in the village of Rathmore, near Chimanimani , in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe, a few miles from the border with Mozambique . In 2003 he lived at 39 Lansdowne Gardens in London .

He died "peacefully" in November 2013 at the age of 87. The funeral took place on December 5, 2013; the funeral was at St Margaret's Church in Westminster , London.

The heir apparent is his nephew Tyrone Shaun Terence Plunket (* 1966), a former honor Page ( Page of Honor ) of the Queen.

Membership in the House of Lords

Upon inheriting the title of Baron Plunket, Robin Plunket became an official member of the House of Lords on May 28, 1975 . In the House of Lords he sat for the Conservative Party . His first speech on November 12, 1976 was in the debate on the extension of the regulations of the Southern Rhodesia Act 1965. In the House of Lords, as in his inaugural address, he spoke mainly on the Rhodesia question. In the Hansard , Plunket's verbal contributions from 1976 to 1998 are documented. In January 1998, he last spoke up in the House of Lords in a debate on land policy and the acquisition of real estate in Zimbabwe. In the 1997/98 session, he was present on four days. His membership in the House of Lords ended on November 11, 1999 by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

He married Jennifer Southwell, the second daughter of Bailey Southwell and his wife Erica Barry, on November 8, 1951. He was married to his wife for 62 years. The marriage was childless.
