Robin Renwick, Baron Renwick of Clifton , KCMG , FRSA (born December 13, 1937 ) is a British former diplomat and politician who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1997 .

Life

Diplomatic career

After attending St Paul's School (London) made Renwick 1956-1958 military service in the British Army and joined in 1963 after a study of the science of history at Jesus College of the University of Cambridge , which he with a Master of Arts graduated (MA History) into the foreign service of the Foreign Office . After a post at the Embassy in Senegal between 1963 and 1964 and a subsequent position at the headquarters of the Foreign Office, he worked at the High Commission in India from 1966 to 1969 .

He then served as private secretary to the Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1970 to 1972 and then as First Secretary at the Embassy in France between 1972 and 1976 , before he was an advisor in the Cabinet Office until 1978 . After he was head of the Department for Rhodesia in the Foreign Ministry from 1978 to 1980 and then for a short time political advisor to the Governor of Southern Rhodesia Christopher Soames , he worked as a visiting fellow at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University between 1980 and 1981 . During this time in 1980 he became Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George .

Afterwards he was employed as head of the office of the embassy in the USA until 1984 and after his return he was senior assistant to the undersecretary of state in the State Department from 1984 to 1987. In 1987 he succeeded Patrick Moberly as High Commissioner in South Africa and held this position until he was replaced by Anthony Reeve in 1991. In 1989 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, henceforth adding the name “Sir “Led.

In 1991 he returned to the USA and was ambassador there until he was replaced by John Kerr, Baron Kerr of Kinlochard in 1995.

Economic manager and member of the House of Lords

After retiring from the diplomatic service, Renwick moved into the private sector and was Chairman of the Board of Fluor Corporation between 1996 and 2011 . He has also served on the board of directors of numerous companies such as Richemont (since 1995), British Airways (1996 to 2005), Fluor Corporation (1997 to 2008), Canal + (1997 to 1999) and BHP Billiton (1997 to 2005).

By a letters patent dated September 26, 1997, he was raised to life peer as Baron Renwick of Clifton , of Chelsea in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Shortly thereafter, he was introduced ("Introduction") as a member of the House of Lords , in which he belongs to the group of so-called Crossbenchers .

Subsequently, Lord Renwick of Clifton, who was trustee of the weekly newspaper The Economist between 1996 and 2010, was initially vice chairman of Robert Fleming Holdings Ltd from 1999 to 2000 and has been vice chairman of Fleming Family and Partners since 2000. In addition, he has been Vice Chairman of the investment bank JP Morgan Europe since 2001 and of the broker JP Morgan Cazenove since 2005 . He was also a board member of SABMiller (1999 to 2008) and Gem Diamonds (2007 to 2009) and has been a member of the board of Vallar plc since 2010.

Renwick, who became an Honorary Fellow of Jesus College at the University of Cambridge in 1992 , has also received honorary doctorates from the Witwatersrand University (Hon. LL.D.) and the College of William & Mary (Hon. D.Litt.) And is also Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts .
