List of British High Commissioners in South Africa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The British High Commissioner for South Africa represents the interests of the British government in southern Africa . From the establishment of the post in 1847 to 1901, he headed the colonial government in the Cape Colony as governor , later also in the protectorates of Basutoland , Bechuanaland and Swaziland , as well as diplomatic relations with the independent neighboring states. From 1901 to 1910 he also acted as administrator or governor of the annexed Boer republics Transvaal and Orange Free State . From the founding of the South African Union in 1910 to the Statute of Westminster in 1931, the office was linked to that of Governor General , after which the status changed to that of Ambassador . From 1961 to 1994, when the Republic of South Africa withdrew from the Commonwealth of Nations , the post was also called that. The High Commissioner is currently accredited in South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho and is based in Pretoria .
