The Rocca Orsini is a hilltop castle in the Italian municipality of Scurcola Marsicana in the province of L'Aquila .

history

facade

The Rocca Orsini is located at the highest point of the Scurcola Marsicana settlement above the Piani Palentini with the Valle del Salto in the north and the Valle dell'Imele in the south. After examining the monument, it was possible to restore a number of buildings in the styles of different historical periods.

The oldest part dates from the Norman - Suebi period in the 13th century in the form of a fenced castle, similar to many other fortresses in the area of L'Aquila , such as B. the Castello di San Pio delle Camere , which the fiefs of the De Pontibus family had built. The layout of the enclosed castle is based on a pentagonal tower in the highest corner and a triangular enclosure that extends towards the valley. Historical sources confirm the secure existence of the castle ( Castrum Sculcule ) at the time of the Battle of Tagliacozzo in 1268 between Conradin and Charles I of Naples .

The reconstruction of the enclosed castle into a Renaissance fortress can be dated to the end of the 15th century and was carried out on behalf of the Orsini family . In particular , in 1490 , Gentile Virginio Orsini , Count of Tagliacozzo and Lord of Bracciano , commissioned Francesco di Giorgio Martini , who was still working on the construction of the Campagnano di Roma castle, to design the new complex.

The transfer of the castle to the Colonnas in the 16th century did not lead to any major changes to the complex.

description

back

The current structure of Castello Orsini has a triangular floor plan with two large, cylindrical towers at the corners of the base line and a bastion in a semi-weathered shape on the north-western strut, which replaced the pentagonal strut of the earlier, enclosed castle.

According to Francesco di Giorgio Martini, the choice of a triangular floor plan was aimed at minimizing the number of sides exposed to besiegers. The defense concept was also adapted to the spread of firearms by placing casemates at the base line for the defense and adjusting the thickness of the walls so that they could withstand the bombardments. In addition, the walkway on the walls was uninterrupted over the entire perimeter to allow quick movements.

The long-abandoned buildings have recently undergone renovation work initiated by a committee for the Castello Orsini.
