Rocky River is a city in Cuyahoga County in the US state of Ohio . It is located on the south shore of Lake Erie , about 13 kilometers west of Cleveland , is 5.6 square miles (14.5 km²) and had (2000) 20,735 inhabitants, 96.8% of them white. The name comes from the Rocky River of the same name , on whose left high bank the city lies and which flows into the lake at this point.
The urban area is bounded to the north by the lake and to the west by Windrush Drive. The southern border stretches between Westwood Road, Center Ridge Road and Westover Avenue, and to the east the Rocky River, which gives it its name, forms the border. Neighboring communities are Bay Village and Westlake to the west, Fairview Park to the south and Lakewood to the east. The metropolitan area is also divided into northern and southern halves by Interstate 90 . The river bed of the Rocky River lies in a gorge around 35 meters deep and is spanned by some high bridges.
The city has several shopping centers, a golf course and a marina on the estuary. There is no industry worth mentioning.
Rocky River was originally part of Rockport Township and was spun off in 1903. The community remained rural until the 1920s. Thereafter the population rose rapidly from (1920) 1,861 to (1950) 11,237 inhabitants and reached its highest level in 1970 with 22,958 people. In 1930 Rocky River became a city.
