Roger Allen Christian (born December 1, 1935 in Warroad , Minnesota , † November 9, 2011 in Grand Forks , North Dakota ) was an American ice hockey player . He won the gold medal with the US national team at the 1960 Olympic Games .

Career

Christian grew up in Warroad, northern Minnesota. Together with his brother Bill , he led the hockey team of the Warroad High School to the State Tournament in 1953 , where they failed only in the final at the St. Paul Johnson Governors . The team was trained by Cal Marvin . In 1956 Christian graduated from school. Together with his brother, he played with a few interruptions from then on for the Warroad Lakers , with whom they had various successes and were appointed to the national team, also trained by Cal Marvin . With this they took part in the 1958 World Cup in Oslo , where they finished fifth. Both were also selected for the US team of the 1960 Olympic ice hockey tournament in Squaw Valley . Outstanding was the last game of the final round against Czechoslovakia , when the US team was 3: 4 behind after two thirds and Roger Christian managed a hat trick in the third period and the United States won the game 9: 4 and thus the gold medal . In total, Christian scored eight goals and three assists in six games. The brothers also took part in the 1962 World Cup (3rd place), the 1964 Winter Olympics , which the United States finished in fifth place (four goals and an assist in eight games), and the 1965 World Cup, which the Americans finished in sixth place . Christian remained active for the Warroad Lakers until the 1970s.

In 1964 Christian founded Christian Brother's Hockey Sticks , a manufacturer of ice hockey sticks , with his brother Bill and his brother-in-law Hal Bakke . In 2002 the company was sold to a sporting goods manufacturer.

In 1989, Christian was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
