Roger Dufraisse (born March 11, 1922 in Paris , † November 20, 2000 in Paris) was a French historian .

Roger Dufraisse completed his training from 1938 to 1941 at the École Normale d'Instituteurs and initially worked as a teacher. After the end of the war, he studied history at the University of Strasbourg from 1946 to 1953 . Parallel to his studies, he taught as a teacher at French schools in Konstanz , Bad Kreuznach , Mainz and Baden-Baden . His dissertation from 1953 dealt with the history of the Deutsche Mark . In the following years Dufraisse worked as a teacher in Bischwiller , Hagenau and Châlons-sur-Marne . Extensive archive studies during this period resulted in numerous contributions, particularly on the Alsatian economic and social history of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1959, when he moved to the University of Caen , he shifted his activities from teaching to the academic field. From then on, Dufraisse intended to classify his regional and local historical works in a larger context. His dissertation from 1973, La contrebande dans les départements réunis de la rive gauche du Rhin à l'époque napoléonienne, 1797-1814 dealt with the Napoleonic hegemonic policy using the example of the Rhenish smuggling trade.

In 1979 Dufraisse became Directeur d'études à l ' École pratique des Hautes Études . In addition to economic and social-historical approaches, political, intellectual and cultural-historical questions now also come to the fore in his research. In 1987/88 Dufraisse spent an academic year as a scholarship holder at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich. The research project dealt with the intellectual conflicts between revolution and counterrevolution in the Franco-German comparison and the presence of Napoleon in the collective memory of the Germans. Dufraisse wrote fundamental works on the history of Germany in the Napoleonic era and on the Confederation of the Rhine .
