Roh Tae-woo (* as Ro Taigu on December 4, 1932 in Taikyū , Keishō-hokudō Sub - Province, Chōsen Province , then the Japanese Empire , now South Korea ) is a former South Korean general and politician. He was the sixth President of South Korea from 1988 to 1993. He is known for the introduction of the North Policy , which aimed to normalize relations with the Soviet Union and China , and indirectly with North Korea as well .
Life
On July 11, 1983, Roh Tae-woo took over the office of chairman of the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee , which he handed over to Park Seh-jik on May 7, 1985 . He himself took over the chairmanship of the Democratic Justice Party .
The military ruler Chun Doo-hwan had chosen him as his successor as president, whereas the South Korean public was in a storm in June 1987 . The dictatorial regime was forced to make concessions, leading to constitutional reform and the first democratic elections in South Korea . In December of that year, Roh was able to prevail against the candidates of the democratic opposition. In accordance with the right to vote, a relative majority was sufficient for him. Since the opposition could not agree on a single applicant and entered the race with Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung , Roh won with only 36.6 percent of the vote. In the following presidential election in 1992, Roh was finally replaced by Kim Young-sam.
In the run-up to and during Roh's presidency, pro-democracy demonstrations began in 1987 in Seoul and other cities in South Korea, which were also noticed internationally during the 1988 Summer Olympics . As president, Roh implemented numerous social reforms, which enabled his government to further stabilize the still uncertain democracy.
He was tried in the late 1990s for incidents during the military dictatorship and sentenced to a long prison term.
Roh is married and lives in Seoul . His son-in-law is the manager and billionaire Chey Tae-won .
