Rolf-Dietrich Ratzmann
Rolf-Dietrich Ratzmann (born April 26, 1944 in Zeitz ; † April 9, 1992 in Hogenbögen near Cloppenburg , Lower Saxony ) was a German painter , graphic artist and art teacher.
Life
Ratzmann spent his further childhood and youth in Lünen (Westphalia), where his parents had fled with the then nine-year-old from the GDR in 1953 . Already during his school days at the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium (Lünen) his great interest in painting developed. From 1962 to 1965 he studied commercial graphics at the Werkkunstschule Dortmund . A one-year scholarship led him to the College of Arts in Leeds (England) in 1965 , where he continued his graphic studies, but also became a master student in free painting. In 1966 he received another annual scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts , Paris . Ratzmann completed his studies at the State University of Fine Arts , Hamburg , which followed from 1967 to 1969 , with, among other things, the qualification to teach art at grammar schools. He then returned to Lünen and worked there as an artist and as an art teacher at Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium. In 1988 he took time off from teaching at school and worked as a freelance painter until his death.
Ratzmann's expressive art is sometimes characterized as “neo-expressionistic”, but according to the critic Ludwig Zerull , this label does not do justice to “[the] seriousness of this artist, who would have been misjudged as a painter in the expressionist succession”. Ratzmann himself characterized his artistic approach in a diary entry in 1981: “I only use thick brushes to avoid any pettiness. Skill is the death of my painting. "
The dynamic lines and the work with strong colors, like that of the French painter Maurice de Vlaminck (1876–1958), determined his work.
Ratzmann was married and left behind a wife and two daughters. In 1999 he was honored by the city of Lünen, with which he was connected all his life, by naming a street after him.
