Rolf Wenzel

Rolf Wenzel (born April 16, 1934 in Kassel ; † June 1, 2018 ) was a German officer ( Colonel a. D.) and an association functionary.

Life

After graduating from high school , Rolf Wenzel began an apprenticeship as a banker . In 1956 he joined the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate in the pioneer troop . He was u. a. Deputy battalion commander and, with the rank of first lieutenant, department head in the Army headquarters (SDH). In 1985 he was elected chairman of the German Armed Forces Association (DBwV), which represents more than 250,000 members, with around 93 percent of the vote . He held this office until 1993. Wenzel retired as a colonel.

During his tenure he repeatedly drew attention to abuses in the troops, where he also criticized the Defense Minister Volker Rühe . In the years of change he played a leading role in the talks between the German Armed Forces Association and the Association of Professional Soldiers of the National People's Army .

Wenzel died at the age of 84 and was buried on June 13, 2018 in the cemetery in Bergheim-Thorr .
