Ronald Rother (born December 26, 1943 in Berlin ; † December 17, 2017 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman , vicar general and provost of St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin.

Life

Rother, who grew up in Bestensee in Brandenburg , fled with his family to West Berlin in 1952 . There he attended business school and then did an apprenticeship at the Berlin tax office .

After three years in the business, Ronald Rother made up his Abitur and entered the Collegium Leoninum , the Archbishop's Theological Convict in Paderborn and studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Paderborn and Innsbruck . On February 18, 1978, Rother was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Berlin from Cardinal Alfred Bengsch in Berlin . He was initially chaplain in St. Christophorus in Berlin-Neukölln and St. Ludwig in Berlin-Wilmersdorf.

From 1984 to 1987 Rother was head of the Episcopal Office for Youth Pastoral Care and President of the Diocesan Association of the Federation of German Catholic Youth . Furthermore, from 1988 he was initially administrator of the Kuratie Mariä Himmelfahrt in Berlin-Kladow; when this was raised to a parish in 1989, he was pastor there from 1990 . In 1995 he went to the Heilig Kreuz congregation in Frankfurt (Oder) as a pastor . In 1999 he was appointed dean of the Fürstenwalde / Spree dean 's office . From 1995 to 2004, in addition to these tasks, he was the prison chaplain of the Frankfurt (Oder) correctional facility .

On July 15, 2004, Georg Cardinal Sterzinsky appointed him Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Berlin to succeed Peter Wehr . In October 2005 he appointed him resident cathedral chapter . Rother earned particular merit in the financial rehabilitation of the archdiocese, which under his leadership was able to reduce considerable deficits. He initially headed the Archbishop's Ordinariate under Archbishop Rainer Maria Woelki , who confirmed his appointment as Vicar General on the day he took office on August 27, 2011.

In January 2012, certain Archbishop Woelki as the new Vicar General the previous Offizial Tobias Przytarski , and Ronald Rother was March 1, 2012, succeeding prelate Stefan Dybowski provost at St. Hedwig's Cathedral.

As cathedral provost, Rother was responsible for the plans initiated by Archbishop Woelki for the redesign and renovation of St. Hedwig's Cathedral. On June 29, 2016, Rother retired as provost of the cathedral and retired.
