Rosario , also known as Villa del Rosario , Rosario Oriental or Rosario del Colla is a city in southern Uruguay .
geography
location
It is located in the south-eastern part of the Colonia department in sector 3 . The distance to the eastern state capital Montevideo is approx. 130 km. About 60 km west of Rosario is Colonia del Sacramento , the capital of the department. The towns of Nueva Helvecia (northeast) and Colonia Valdense (southeast), as well as the villages of Paraje Minuano (southwest), La Paz (southeast) and Barker (northwest) are in the vicinity . The Río Rosario also flows to the east of the city area, which is 18 m above sea level .

Black granite deposits exist in the Rosario area .
history
Rosario was founded by Benito Herosa on January 24th, 1775 and is therefore the only city of Spanish origin in the department of Colonia. On August 17, 1920, it became legal under the Ley No. 7,257 classified as Ciudad (city).

With the Liceo de Rosario "Agustín Urbano Indart Curutchet" founded in 1933, Rosario has a secondary school ( Liceo ).

The city has an open channel (Canal 8) and two local radio stations (Radio FM 89.9 MHz).

Rosario is close to Ruta 1 , while Ruta 102 runs through the city.
