Rosario + Vampire ( Japanese ロ ザ リ オ と バ ン パ イ ア ) is a manga drawn by Akihisa Ikeda , which is assigned to the Shōnen , Harem and Etchi genre and has been continued in various magazines since August 2004. In 2008, the manga was in the form of anime - television series adapted by two seasons.

action

The average student Tsukune Aono ( 青 野 月 音 , Aono Tsukune ) fails to get admission to one of the private high schools because of his poor test results. Nevertheless, it is accepted by a school, which turns out to be a school for supernatural monsters ( yōkai ), whose students hate people above all else. Once there, he is run over by the beautiful Moka Akashiya ( 赤 夜 萌香 , Akashiya Moka ) on her bike. The two become friends in an unusual way, since Moka is a vampire and she is drawn to the sweet scent of human blood. At least now Tsukune notices his predicament; but there is no turning back as the school bus took him to another dimension.

Though vampiric in origin, Moka is a nice girl that Tsukune falls in love with quickly. Blinded by this, he decided to go to school despite the great dangers. Fortunately for him, all students have to disguise themselves as human beings so that their different types do not cause conflicts. So he spends his time studying in order to keep his grades and to keep the various monsters at bay. In one of these confrontations, in which he would be hopelessly defeated, Mokas rips off Rosario (a necklace in the shape of a cross), whereupon her suppressed supernatural powers are set free, making her one of the strongest creatures in the school. However, in this state she has a different personality that is cold-hearted and usually in a bad mood. Only Tsukune manages to remove the Rosario; and only in an extreme emergency.

During his stay a whole harem of female friends builds up around Tsukune, all of whom want to seduce him. This includes the Succubus Kurumu Kurono ( 黑 乃 胡 夢 , Kurono Kurumu ), which initially represents a rival of Moka and tries to deny the male students, including Tsukune, Moka with her charming techniques and large breasts. However, when she is defeated by Moka's second self, she decides to have a friendly relationship with the two of them, where she tries again and again to win Tsukune without resorting to her strength.

In a slightly later part of the plot, the characters meet the very young witch Yukari Sendo ( 仙童 紫 , Sendo Yukari ). She is the best student of the Yōkai Academy , but always wears the costume of a witch, which is seen by the other students as a disregard for the school rules. Since witches are only half seen as monsters, she is very lonely and has no friends at school, so that she finally falls in love with Moka. However, when both help her to get rid of a threatening classmate, she also falls for Tsukune. Due to the fact that she is a witch, she plays around with the weirdest things, which are used over and over again for fun activities.

Mizore Shirayuki ( 白雪 み ぞ れ , Shirayuki Mizore ) is a snow woman who can turn water into snow and ice and control it. In her typical appearance she always has a mobile cooler that looks like a lollipop in her mouth and is very quiet by nature. She returns to school after a long absence and soon shows her interest in Tsukune, which goes well beyond normal behavior. It was often misunderstood by everyone in the beginning, which led to some problems. When she defends herself against a very pushy teacher, it almost leads to a school expulsion, but the case is solved by Tsukune at the last second and he rescues her. She chases after him like a stalker and can only slowly get used to the other members of the newspaper club that Tsukune, Moka, Kurono and Yukari had joined; however, she cannot leave Tsukune and pursues him at every turn. Especially when Tsukune is alone with one of the girls, Mizore appears as a running gag somewhere, in the strangest places (under the table, behind doors, bushes, in the bathroom, ...) in the respective scene.

When the school newspaper club visits the human world during the holidays, they meet the witch Rubi Tōjō ( 橙 条 瑠 妃 , Tōjō Rubi ), who lives among the people , who aims to destroy all of humanity, since her holy abode her dead master's dump was created. However, when she gets help from other characters, she abandons this plan and has been working within the Yōkai Academy since the second part of the series. Although she is not a regular student, she is allowed to join the school newspaper club. She is also secretly in love with Tsukune. In the anime, this part of the plot deviates slightly from the specifications of the manga, but leads to the same result.

At the end of the first season of the anime series and in the third part of the manga edition, Tsukune's real identity is cleared up by the radical Public Security Commission. He was supposed to be burned on a large wooden cross in front of all the students, but his friends saved him. Moka bites Tsukune and together they defeat the leader of the commission in battle. That he is human is thus again veiled.

Kokoa Shuzen ( 朱 染 心愛 , Shuzen Kokoa ), Moka's younger half-sister , appears within the second manga edition and the second television series . Her powers are not sealed and she uses a tame bat that she can transform into a wide variety of weapons. She hates her sister Moka for sealing her "inner soul", which she adored and loved. She only has to overcome herself when she realizes that only Tsukune seems to have the ability to remove Moka's Rosario . Ultimately, she accepts the new nature of Moka and, like her sister, begins to drink Tsukune's blood.

Characters

Tsukune Aono ( 青 野 月 音 , Aono Tsukune )
Tsukune was an ordinary person. Because he failed the entrance exam, only one school accepts him. He later learns that it is a school for monsters in another dimension. Since he is the only person, this involves many problems because no one is allowed to discover his true identity, as he can then be executed according to the school rules. At first he wants to go back to the human world, but later he decides to stay because he wants to get closer to Moka. As the series progresses, several characters fall in love with him, leading to a competitive battle.
He ran into threatening danger several times, in which he was once so badly injured that he received her blood from Moka to heal these injuries. It also temporarily gave him the powers of a vampire. However, Moka's blood itself later became a danger to him and threatened to turn into a ghoul . From the headmaster of the school he received a sacred bracelet that is supposed to suppress the vampire blood and over time he learned to control the existing blood. Then towards the end of the manga, he was completely turned into a vampire.
Moka Akashiya ( 赤 夜 萌香 , Akashiya Moka )
Moka is a vampire who has sealed her powers with a Rosario in order to be able to live in the human world. While the outer moka is a very loving person, the unleashed moka in person is aloof and aggressive in combat. She has two older sisters and one younger. At first she runs over Tsukune on her bike. Attracted by the scent of his human blood, she bites Tsukune. He's the first she's ever sucking blood. She falls in love with Tsukune. He is the only one who can unleash her powerful vampire powers. Since she describes Tsukune's blood as very "delicious", she almost becomes dependent on him.
As the manga series progresses, it turns out that the outer moka is just a pseudo-personality created by her mother, while the inner moka is the real one. Towards the end of the manga, the outer Moka dies, but she and Tsukune still confess their love, while the inner Moka abandoned her detached behavior and admitted that she only wanted to be with Tsukune.
Kurumu Kurono ( 黑 乃 胡 夢 , Kurono Kurumu )
Kurumu is a succubus and rival of Moka. She tries to use her Yokai special ability to win over the male students and initially also Tsukune for her Yokai harem. Her yokai ability turns any boy who kisses her into a willing slave. However, when she is defeated by Moka's second self, she decides to have a friendly relationship with the two of them, where she tries again and again to win Tsukune without resorting to her strength.
Yukari Sendo ( 仙童 紫 , Sendo Yukari )
The 11 year old witch Yukari Sendo is the best student of the Yōkai Academy and has skipped some classes, but always wears the costume of a witch, which is seen by the other students as a disregard of the school rules. Since she belongs to a hated species, she is very lonely, has no friends at school and is bullied. Moka stops the bullying and Yukari falls in love with her. Tsukune hated the witch at the beginning because she tries to keep him away from Moka. When Tsukune and Moka save her from the bullies who tried to eat her, and Tsukune swears that she will never be alone again, she falls in love with Tsukune. She often argues with Kurumu and tries to appear older than she is.
Mizore Shirayuki ( 白雪 み ぞ れ , Shirayuki Mizore )
Mizore is a snow woman and can control ice in any way she likes. In her typical appearance she always has a lollipop in her mouth and is very quiet by nature. She returns to school after a long absence and soon shows her interest in Tsukune, which goes well beyond normal behavior. She chases after him like a stalker and can only slowly get used to the other members of the newspaper club that Tsukune, Moka, Kurono and Yukari had joined; however, she cannot leave Tsukune and pursues him at every turn. Especially when Tsukune is alone with one of the girls, Mizore appears as a running gag somewhere, in the strangest places in the respective scene.
Rubi Tōjō ( 橙 条 瑠 妃 , Tōjō Rubi )
When the school newspaper club visits the human world during the holidays, they meet the witch Rubi Tōjō, who lives among the people. After the fight with Lady Oyakata, the newspaper club brought her to the Yōkai Gakuen. She then works there because she no longer has any relatives. She is also secretly in love with Tsukune.
Kokoa Shuzen ( 朱 染 心愛 , Shuzen Kokoa )
Kokoa only appears in the second season of Rosario Vampire. She is Moka's little half-sister and also a vampire, but her powers are not sealed. At first she tries to bring out Moka's true vampiric nature, but later comes to terms with her sister's current condition, and from then on often sucks Tsukune's blood. She has a pet bat named Koa. In the anime series, she explains things that are in footnotes in the manga and acts as a referee in fights.

Adaptations

Anime

Rosario to Vampire

The gonzo- animated first season of the series, comprising 13 episodes, was directed by the still relatively unknown Takayuki Inagaki . He has previously worked as a director on works such as Black Cat , Koharu Biyori , Marginal Prince - Gekkeiju no Ōji-tachi . The character design was created by Mariko Fujita together with the artistic director Shigemi Ikeda . The monsters were designed by Hiroyuki Kanbe . The drawings of the backgrounds come from the studio Atelier Musa, which specializes in this . The Half HP Studio recording studio was hired for the sound effects .

The anime differs from the manga in that it follows a different chronology, places more emphasis on comedy, and largely omits the manga's dark themes.

The opening and closing credits , COSMIC LOVE and Dancing in the velvet moon , were both sung by Moka's narrator, Nana Mizuki . The title of the opening credits was written by Ryoji Sonoda and composed and arranged by Junpei Fujita . The end credits were written by the singer and Noriyasu Agematsu was responsible for the arrangement and composition of the piece. In the first and last episodes, COSMIC LOVE was used in the credits, while the opening credits were omitted in these episodes.

The series was first announced by a trailer on its own website in October 2007, before the first official television preview was also available on the website in December 2007. The Anime - television series was first from 3 January 2008 at the Japanese television on the transmitters Aomori Broadcasting Corporation , Chiba TV , Tokyo Metropolitan Television , TV Aichi , TV Kanagawa , TV Osaka and TV Saitama transmitted. The last and 13th episode of this series ran on March 27, 2008.

Rosario to Vampire Capu2

As in the first season, Takayuki Inagaki from Studio Gonzo is directing, with the same team as before working on the second part. The Capu2 ( カ プ チ ュ ー , Kapu chū ) in the title is identical to the onomatopoeia when Moka Tsukune sucks blood, capu / kapu referring to the bite and chū to the sucking sound .

The title songs were also reinterpreted by Nana Mizuki. From episode 2 on, these are Discotheque in the opening credits and Trinity Cross in the credits. The first episode used Discotheque in the credits, but had no opening credits.

The series was broadcast from October 2, 2008 on the Japanese channels Aomori Broadcasting Corporation , Chiba TV , Gifu Broadcasting , Mie TV , Tokyo MX , TV Kanagawa , TV Osaka and TV Saitama . The last episode was shown on December 24, 2008.

The series has been broadcast in Germany on ProSieben Maxx since October 5, 2018 .

Radio plays

Based on the plot of the manga, Shueisha published the radio play Rosario + Vampire on August 31, 2006 . This was followed by another radio play entitled Rosario + Vampire 2: Drama CD ( ロ ザ リ オ と バ ン パ イ ア 2 ド ラ マ CD) on December 14, 2007.

On July 25, 2008, the radio play TV Animation Drama CD: Rosario + Vampire ( TV ア ニ メ ー シ ョ ン ド ラ マ CD ロ ザ リ オ と バ ン パ イ ア ) was released on the label Marine Entertainment .

The radio show produced by Onsen resulted in a 2 CD album Radio CD: Rosario + Vampire ( ラ ジ オ CD ロ ザ リ オ と バ ン パ イ ア ), which was released on August 6, 2008 after a slight delay. The first CD contained several pieces of music, while the second contained a compilation of the first 13 radio broadcasts.

music

Building on the anime adaptations, several albums and two series of maxi CDs were released. Of the first series of singles entitled Rosario + Vampire: Character Song ( ロ ザ リ オ と バ ン パ イ ア キ ャ ラ ク タ ー ソ ン グ ), the first three CDs were released on February 14, 2008, followed by three more on March 26, 2008. The numbered maxis were released under the King Records label and were each dedicated to one of the main female characters in the order Moka , Kurumu , Yukari , Mizore and Rubi . This order also corresponds to the appearance of the characters within the series. The sixth CD completed this series and featured all female characters on the cover.

Another series of maxi CDs was presented for the second season of the television series. This should include seven singles, which should be released from October 29, 2008. It is entitled Rosario + Vampire Capu2: Character Song ( ロ ザ リ オ と バ ン パ イ ア Capu2 キ ャ ラ ク タ ー ソ ン グ ), the individual editions of which are again dedicated to the main female characters. A new addition is a CD for the character Kokoa, which was inserted between the first and second releases, thereby expanding the series to seven CDs.

reception

In Nielsen BookScan statistics , the second edition of Rosario + Vampire was ranked 16th best-selling graphic novel in the past two months in the United States in September 2008 . This made Rosario + Vampire the only shōnen manga that debuted in 2008 and was among the 20 best-selling graphics novels.

In the course of the plot, " hopeless entanglements and countless embarrassing scenes" developed , according to the Animania , who " create a mood" in scenes in super deformed style . Beyond the comedy with some funny ideas and the plentiful fan service with pantyshots and " wobbling giant breasts" , the story is not very original and has little to offer. In addition to a lot of comedy and eroticism, the series also contains some action, which, however, is rather unspectacularly staged. The animation, which occasionally also uses computer animation, is said to be of a solid television standard and the music with “ lively, jazzy piano and Hammond organ melodies” as well as “ ominous winds and strings” for battle scenes has been chosen appropriately.
