Rose of Tralee
Rose of Tralee is the annually awarded title for a young Irish woman who goes on a world tour to promote the city of Tralee , County Kerry and the Republic of Ireland the following year . It also represents the feeling of togetherness among Irish emigrants.
The Rose of Tralee will be determined as part of a festival in Tralee . Young women from Ireland and from Irish communities around the world apply. In contrast to pure beauty contests, there is no bikini appearance at the Rose of Tralee .
history
The first choice came as an enrichment to the program of a horse racing week in 1959. The inventors of the competition took the title from a sentimental love song of the 19th century, in which it says: "That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee".
Initially only young women from Tralee took part; then applicants came from Kerry and the other Irish counties . Today, Irish parishes from around the world put Rose candidates in primary elections .
The event has been broadcast on Irish television since 1967. In 1986 the festival was first opened by an Irish Prime Minister with Charles Haughey .
