Life

Rosemary Neering was born in Croydon, Surrey, England in 1945 and came to Canada with her parents on July 1, 1947, at the age of two. After completing school, she worked as a reporter for various daily newspapers and periodicals such as British Columbia Magazine , Canada's History Magazine and Western Living in the 1960s , which brought her to British Columbia in September 1965 . From 1975 to 1979 she was an editor for Beautiful British Columbia magazine . Shortly before, she had published her first book in 1973. Since then she has published around forty titles on historical, biographical and social topics, historical hiking guides, as well as numerous non-fiction and school books on geographical and historical topics for children and young people. Most of the latter titles in particular have been translated into French .

Since 1981 she has been working almost exclusively as a freelance writer. From 1991 to 1992 she was president of the Periodical Writers Association of Canada and from 1999 to 2001 she was a board member of CanCopy (Access Copyright).

After having in the past usually biographies about courageous and unconventional women ( Emily Carr . 1977), politicians like William Andrew Cecil Bennett (1981) or explorers like the explorer Alexander Mackenzie , the cartographer David Thompson , the entrepreneur Simon Fraser , George Vancouver and James Cook ( In the Path of the Explorers: Tracing the Expeditions of Vancouver, Cook, Mackenzie, Fraser and Thompson. 1992), she wrote with Marilyn McCrimmon in Facing Changes, Finding Freedom: Canadian Women at Midlife ( 1996) anticipates the social problems of divorced or widowed wives in middle age on the labor market. In her work, The Canadian Housewife: An Affecionate History (2005), she paid more attention to the previously neglected field of study of the historical and social significance of the Canadian housewife . She rounded off this series of women-specific topics with the award-winning collection of Canadian pioneer women up to 1900, Wild West Women: Travelers, Adventurers and Rebels (2001). In her last book, The Pig War. The last Canada-US border conflict (2011) described the last US-Canadian border conflict when, on May 15, 1859, an American settler shot and killed a pig belonging to the Hudson's Bay Company on San Juan Island .

In 1991/92 she completed a year as a visiting professor at the Department of Creative Writing at the University of Victoria .

1989 she stood with Continental Dash: The Russian-American Telegraph on the shortlist of the Bill Duthie Booksellers' Choice Award . With Down the Road she was able to win the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize in 1992 . With Wild West Woman she was nominated for both the Hubert Evans Fiction Prize and the Bill Duthie BC Booksellers' Choice Award, which is also part of the BC Book Prizes , but at least won the competition for the VanCity Book Award.

Rosemary Neering lives in Victoria with her husband Joe Thompson and their cat .
