Rosia is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Sovicille in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is 3.3 km south of the capital Sovicille, 11.5 km southwest of the provincial capital Siena and 58 km south of the regional capital Florence . The place is in the Maremma countryside and on the northeastern edge of the Colline Metallifere at 205 m in the Montagnola Senese . The place is located on the river of the same name and also belongs to the Mersetal .

history

The place is first mentioned in 1156 as a castle of the Ardengheschi family . From May 27, 1202, Siena ruled the place. Rosia was set on fire by Uguccione della Faggiola in March 1316 . After the defeat of the Senese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence , the place also fell to the Duchy of Tuscany .

  • Castello di Montarrenti , 4 km southwest located castle at 345 meters above sea level. Was first mentioned in 1156 and fell under the control of Siena in 1217.
  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista a Rosia , church and pieve from the 11th century, renovated in the 14th century. Contains the work Madonna in trono col Bambino ei Santi Sebastiano e Antonio Abate by the Senese painter Guidoccio Cozzarelli (1450–1517) . Belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino .
  • Ponte della Pia , stone arch bridge over the Rosia river
  • Eremo di Santa Lucia a Rosia , a few meters south of the Ponte della Pia Hermitage , which geographically already belongs to Chiusdino .
