Rosie is a Swiss feature film directed by Marcel Gisler . It was premiered in January 2013 as the opening film of the 48th Solothurn Film Festival and was shown in Swiss cinemas on May 30, 2013.

action

Rosie is a cheerful and stubborn widow over seventy. She smokes a lot and also likes to have a drink. One day she suffers a stroke and is admitted to the hospital, where she is visited by her two children. Sophie is unhappily married and lives with her husband and child in St. Gallen . Lorenz, a successful writer who lives in Berlin , is in a creative crisis. Neither of them can take care of their mother. Rosie herself believes that with a little help from her neighbor , she can stay in her house in Altstätten and not have to go to an old people's or nursing home for a long time.

When Rosie's condition worsened again and she did not want to accept the help of outpatient care, Lorenz traveled to Altstätten more often to help his mother. While shopping, he meets the much younger DJ Mario, who has long been a big fan of Lorenz's gay literature. An affair starts out from Mario, who has admired him for years. Lorenz sees in it only the enthusiasm of a young lover.

When Lorenz is back in Berlin for the promotion tour for his new book and Sophie doesn't have time to take care of Rosie either, Mario helps out as much as he can.

Back in Altstätten, Lorenz meets an old friend of his deceased father's family dinner in a vantage point on the Ruppenpass . Rosie doesn't want to talk to him. She doesn't say a word why she later never had contact with the man who was also a friend of the family. While searching for traces of his father, Lorenz gradually discovers the secret that Rosie has been carrying around with her for years.

background

The story has much autobiography. He had long wanted to make a film in which the story of his parents played an important role, the director said in an interview.

The Balmerhaus in Altstätten, Rosie's home in the film

Location

The film is set in Eastern Switzerland , where it was shot in the second half of 2012. A large part of the recordings took place at original locations in Altstätten , such as the SBB train station, the local Coop, the Freihof restaurant, the Ziel restaurant and the «Haus Viva» retirement home. Rosie “lives” in the “Balmerhaus” in Altstätten.

criticism

“Rosie is evil, lovely, devious, generous, demanding, flirtatious, sly, in need of love, bossy, affectionate, coarse, loyal ... wonderful! There are seldom films that offer a character and thus an actress (Sibylle Brunner) such a resonance space as «Rosie». "

- Kulturkritik.ch

"And the razor-sharp Swiss-German dialogues without any embarrassment and the fact that director Marcel Gisler is not afraid of grand gestures and pathos in his drama make" Rosie "a Swiss-German feature film that has surpassed most of the last few years."

- NZZ
