Roswell is the eighth solo album by the German rapper Marteria . It was released on May 26, 2017 on the independent label Green Berlin and is distributed by Four Music . The previous album Ring der Nebelungen was released under his pseudonym Marsimoto .

background

On March 29, 2015, Marteria was admitted to hospital. Before that, he had played football at a charity match for Hansa Rostock and had not had a drink for two hours. There was a threat of acute kidney failure. After the successful dialysis , he initially withdrew from the public. He left Berlin and moved back to the Baltic coast. According to his own statements, the incident changed his life. Among other things, he gave up the consumption of alcohol and other drugs . Instead, he went fishing in his spare time.

“Economic interests in art are boring. What do I have to lose? I would stop immediately if I started repeating myself. [...] For me, the charm of music lies in the new. "

- Marten Laciny ("Marteria") : In an interview with Spiegel Online

The album was announced in early February. The first single Aliens - which was recorded together with Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß (known from the band Beatsteaks ) as Teutilla - was released on March 17, 2017 and reached number 41 in the German single charts. The title Das Geld muss weg followed as the second release on May 5, 2017 and was ranked 37th in the charts. Music videos were released for both releases. The album itself rose to position 2 in the German charts.

The album title and cover are based on the Roswell incident from 1947, in which an unidentified flying object (UFO) is said to have crashed in the small US town of Roswell .

The music comes from the producer team The Krauts , who had previously worked with Marteria.

Cover design

The album cover was released on March 16, 2017. It shows a red veiled girl who holds a short sword-like weapon in her hand. A planet and the rising sun can be seen in the background.

The album received mostly positive reviews. Robin Schmidt from the Laut.de e-zine writes that Marteria stimulates “thought-provoking” . He takes "a wide variety of perspectives on society" . The beats of The Krauts are "moving" and "varied" .

Bernhard Landkammer from the music blog metal1 sees the album from a positive perspective. It is a “very good album, musically stringent and covers a wide range of topics.” But it seems “as if Marteria had held back with regard to the production” . The musical direction is "awkward in places" and "inconclusive" .

Daniel Schieferdecker from the hip-hop magazine Juice sums it up: "Playing with creative contrasts, with acoustic antagonisms, with the everyday fors and contradictions of life, he simply masters that."

For Ayke Süthoff from the online magazine Musikexpress , Roswell has a "more mature, serious and also dark side." The beats are "outstanding."

In a positive review, Steffen Bauer from MZEE writes that Marteria has the talent to "wrap complicated issues in abstract garments that make you think." He also highlights the Krauts productions, "which are somewhere between straight rap, pop, Electro and world music move. ” Even if he doubts that Roswell will have a similar influence as the Rostocker's two previous albums , he emphasizes that “ this brilliant album can already be counted as a complete success ” .
