Gilles Roulin (born May 14, 1994 in Grüningen ) is a Swiss ski racer . He is a member of the Swiss-Ski A-team and is particularly successful in the Downhill and Super-G disciplines .

biography

Roulin comes from Grüningen in the canton of Zurich . He learned to ski at the age of two and a half in Lenzerheide , where his parents owned a holiday home. At times he was more interested in snowboarding and football . In the winter of 2005 he drove for a day with Bruno Kernen as part of a sponsorship event , who then encouraged him to join a ski club. From 2009 to 2014 he attended the Stams ski school , from which he graduated with the Matura .

As a 15-year-old, Roulin began participating in FIS races in January 2010 . Notable successes at the international level were initially largely absent in the following years. Increasingly he began to concentrate on the fast disciplines. In January 2014 he made his first appearance in the European Cup , in the same month he became Swiss junior downhill champion. A year later, in February 2015, Roulin won an FIS race for the first time. In the 2015/16 season he established himself in the European Cup and regularly drove into the points, with a 14th place being his best result.

Roulin achieved a significant increase in performance in the 2016/17 European Cup season . He achieved his first podium on January 6, 2017, when he was third on the Wengen descent . Ten days later he won the first ever European Cup downhill run on the (shortened) Streif in Kitzbühel . Two more victories followed in Méribel at the end of January . On February 2, 2017, he won three European Cup races on the same day in Hinterstoder : one descent in the morning, a combination (consisting of this descent and a slalom run the day before) and a second descent in the afternoon. As a result, his victory in the downhill discipline classification was already certain. Four races before the end of the season, he also won the overall standings and the Super-G standings.

Roulin made his debut in the World Cup on February 24, 2017 in the downhill from Kvitfjell , which he finished in 37th place. Two days later he won the first World Cup points in the same place with 25th place in the Super-G. Despite the double burden - he also studies law by distance learning - he was able to establish himself close to the top in his first full World Cup season. In his fifth World Cup race, the Lake Louise descent on November 25, 2017, he finished twelfth. Three weeks later he surprised with fourth place in the downhill on the Saslong in Val Gardena , where he narrowly missed the podium.
