Grateful Dead Records

Grateful Dead Records is a music label founded in 1973 by the music group Grateful Dead .

history

After the contract with Warner Bros. Records expired in the early 1970s , the band founded their own record label called Grateful Dead Records . At the same time, the associated label Round Records was founded. The former should be used for band projects, the latter for solo projects. The idea behind it was that the band would have more freedom in production and could sell and advertise the albums themselves.

Wake of the Flood was released as the first album under the new label in 1973 and the Deadheads were made aware of this via the Dead Heads newsletter :

"We've decided to produce, manufacture, and distribute our records ourselves. The band today finished recording of an all-new studio album (been a long time) called Wake Of The Flood. The album will be made from the highest quality vinyl available, which has the best technical properties. In addition, it will be heavier (weighs more, that is) than most albums available in this country. It will be handled locally through independent record distributors and should be available everywhere. "

With From the Mars Hotel 1974, Blues for Allah 1975 and the live album Steal Your Face 1976 three more albums followed. The records were distributed by United Artists Records . At the same time, the individual members released albums through Round Records .

Originally, Grateful Dead wanted to have more control over their productions. However, the band later resigned from the business side to join Arista Records in 1977 . Shortly thereafter, the labels Grateful Dead Records and Round Records was given up.

In the mid-1990s, Grateful Dead Records and Round Records were used again to release re-editions on CD as well as authorized bootlegs . But also albums of new projects of individual former Grateful Dead members were published here.
