The 5.8 km long route nationale 51 (N 51) initially runs as a two-lane feeder from the Luxembourg-Kirchberg motorway exit ( A1 exit 8) underground under Rond-Point Serra (above ground through the roundabout) to Luxembourg-Merl.
It crosses as a six-lane avenue John F. Kennedy the district Kirchberg (Quartier du Grund Forest and Quartier du Kiem), runs through the Quartier du Parc Central and both European quarter with the EU Court of Justice and the Philharmonic, leads the Boulevard on Grande-Duchesse Charlotte the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge (called Rout Bréck). Shortly after the bridge, the N51 crosses the N52, which connects the Limpertsberg with the city center, at the level of the city theater .
The N51 runs underground through a small tunnel before returning to the surface shortly before the glacis. From there - now known as Boulevard de la Foire - it leads to the busy Stäreplaz intersection, from there towards the Merl district. Here it runs a piece together with the N4 and merges into it a little later.
