Ruben Gunawan

Ruben Muljadi Gunawan (born April 17, 1968 in Jakarta , † August 28, 2005 in Manado ) was an Indonesian chess player .

In 1982 he won the Indonesian U16 Championship in Bandung , in 1983 the Asian Junior Championship in Kuala Lumpur and in 1984 in Jakarta the Indonesian U19 Championship.

For the Indonesian national team, he played at the Asian team championships in 1987 and 1993 on the second reserve board. Indonesia ranked second in Singapore in 1987 and fifth in Kuala Lumpur in 1993. On the third board he played for Indonesia at the Chess Olympiads in Istanbul in 2000 and in Calvià in 2004 . At the world city comparison in Jakarta in 1997, he played on the top board of the Jakarta selection. At the Asian championship for city selections in 1998 in Genting Highlands , he played for Palembang City. His team took third place there.

In 1999 Ruben Gunawan received the title of Grand Master . His highest rating was 2507 from January 1999 to June 2000. At that time he was behind Utut Adianto in second place in the Indonesian Elo ranking. Most recently it was 2,463.

Ruben Gunawan was unable to finish the 2004 Chess Olympiad in Calvià due to pneumonia. He spent more than a month in a hospital there. In 2005, at the age of 37, he died of pneumonia and heart disease. Ruben Gunawan's grave is in Tondano , his wife's hometown.

His older brother Ronny (* 1960) is also a well-known chess player who holds the title of International Master .
