Herman Suradiradja (born October 14, 1947 in Sukabumi ; † June 6, 2016 ) was an Indonesian chess player . In 1978 he was the first player in his country and the third Asian after Eugenio Torre and Rosendo Balinas to receive the title of grandmaster .

Life

Suradiradja came from a well-off family; his father was a diplomat . In 1969 he took part in the Indonesian national championship for the first time and won it in 1975. In the same year he scored his first standard for the title of International Master at a tournament in Singapore . In the following years he stayed in Europe and in 1976 in Lublin he met the second norm. In Bulgaria, where he was trained by Evgeny Ermenkow , he achieved grandmaster standards at tournaments in Primorsko in 1977 and Plovdiv in 1978. Although it was an open secret that Suradiradja had helped his successes with monetary payments, FIDE awarded him the title of grandmaster. He achieved his best Elo number of 2380 from January 1981 to January 1982, from 1987 his Elo number was continuously a maximum of 2300. This made him one of the weakest grandmasters worldwide.

Suradiradja played in four Chess Olympiads : 1966 (2nd reserve board), 1972 (reserve board), 1978 (board 1) and 1980 (board 2). He scored a total of 20 points from 40 games (+10 = 20 −10). He also played at the Asian team championship in 1986 on the top board of the Indonesian team and reached third place with this.

Suradiradja had been seriously ill since 2013, but took part in tournaments in Indonesia until shortly before his death.
