Rudolf Berger (born April 17, 1874 in Brno , † February 27, 1915 in New York ) was a German baritone singer and later a tenor .

Live and act

Rudolf Berger received his vocal training in Brno from Adolf Robinson . He made his baritone debut in 1896 at the Brno City Theater as Count Friedrich von Telramund in Lohengrin . Then he was engaged at the Stadttheater Olomouc until 1897 and from 1898 at the Berlin Court Opera . There he sang in the opera Mudarra by Fernand Le Borne (world premiere) in 1899, in 1900 in the opera Die Beichte von Ferdinand Hummel , in 1904 the part of Thomas Wintz in the opera Der Roland von Berlin by Ruggero Leoncavallo (world premiere) and in 1905 in of the comic opera Die Marriage against Will by Engelbert Humperdinck (world premiere).

In the years 1901, 1906 and 1908 he sang at the Bayreuth Festival in the opera Parsifal and Götterdämmerung by Richard Wagner .

In 1908 the American singing teacher Oscar Saenger (1868–1929) advised him to retrain his voice as a tenor and he trained him in New York to become a hero tenor . He made his debut as a tenor in 1909 at the Berlin Court Opera in the title role of the opera Lohengrin . This was followed by guest appearances in Paris, London, Prague, Amsterdam and at the Vienna Court Opera . In 1913 he went to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut in 1914 as Siegmund in Die Walküre . In subsequent years, he performed in Tannhduser , in Lohengrin , in the Meistersingern Nuremberg (Walther of Stolzing), in Tristan (Tristan) and is Gotterddmmerung (Siegfried).

Rudolf Berger was married to the American soprano Marie Rappold (1879–1957) since 1913 .
