Rudolf Hierl (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf Hierl (* 1958 in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz ) is a German architect , urban planner and professor at the East Bavarian Technical University in Regensburg . He is known for his urban and architectural projects and realizations as well as his numerous competition successes.

Life

Hierl first studied German and theater studies at the Erlangen (1977–1979). In 1979 he began studying architecture at the Technical University of Berlin , which he completed in 1985 with a thesis under Otto Steidle . In 1983 Hierl made a study trip through the USA with guest visits at UCLA and Columbia University in New York. His professional career began in 1985 with a job in Otto Steidle's office, followed by a position responsible for the renovation of the main office of the Stadtsparkasse Munich with Paolo Nestler until 1987. In 1987, Hierl opened his own office in Munich. At the same time, he began working on his doctoral thesis on New Building in Berlin in the 1920s and researched the monograph by the architect Erwin Anton Gutkind . In 1989 this was followed by a dissertation and doctorate with Heinrich Klotz and Otto Steidle at the Philipps University of Marburg .

In 1995 Hierl was appointed to the architecture faculty at the University of Regensburg . From 2007 to 2010 he held the dean's office at the architecture faculty of the East Bavarian Technical University. There he initiated the system of “Teaching Offices” and “Hall A Lectures”.

Hierl works for the Association of German Architects (BDA) and was co-author of the BDA article in 2017 "Standards in Housing. Controversy on the current legal situation ”.

Projects

Hierl develops specific and independent prototypical solutions for different construction tasks, such as his contributions for youth hostels, for the state archive in Landshut, for the new building of the Paulaner brewery's main administration and, above all, his contributions to residential construction: residential construction on Gebirgsjägerplatz in Salzburg, high-rise building in Baierbrunner Strasse, Conversion of the AGFA site, artist studios under the bridge in Ganghofer Strasse. The turn to residential construction and the in-depth study of it go back to the role model, work and influence of Otto Steidle , who continuously encouraged him to do so starting with his doctoral thesis.

New headquarters of the Paulaner brewery in Munich

In this project, Hierl and his team implemented their proposal to combine the classicist part of the brewery building of Franz Xaver Zacherl's old building from 1822 with its 1.5 meter thick brick walls with a modern new building. The old building merges into a filigree facade structure made of white exposed concrete. Narrow ribbon windows in a regular arrangement level at a tight cycle and reduce the load-bearing front surface to the essentials. The two-story old building was converted into a three-story new building. This was built largely from prefabricated components, including a load-bearing reinforced concrete facade on the outside. It consists of pillars and a self-supporting system ceiling. The structure forms a square that integrates the inner courtyard. The main entrance leads into a 6 meter high foyer hall. An old vault has been restored in the basement and is used for events.

Urban development of the Agfa site in Munich

On the former site of the Agfa high-rise building in Obergiesing , which was blown up in 2008, several four- to eight-storey, U-shaped main groups were created as the newly created Weißensee Park, of which the middle one on Weißenseestrasse was realized by Hierl and team. Hierl conceived here that the classic small family - father, mother, children - was no longer up-to-date for current residential construction and therefore refrained from the “principle of stacking” apartments and the associated standardization. Individual aspects of series apartments were worked out by floor-to-floor, apartment-related open spaces on the outer facade as well as three-dimensional building structure modeling with fine color leveling of the outer facades. Loggias, winter gardens and bay windows alternate. The apartments have open balconies or balcony loggias facing the inner courtyard.

Residential tower on the Isar

With this 50 meter high tower, Hierl created a new type of high-rise residential building on the former Siemens site between Obersendling and Solln as part of a newly developed residential area. Diagonal windows give the building an elongated, slender shape. In contrast to earlier construction methods, the aim here was to give the external shape an important role. Five-sided high-rise buildings were provided for in the development plan, which Hierl broke through with an almost square design with rounded corners. The advantage is the gain in light, as every apartment has at least two sides facing the light. The individual apartments have different shapes, sizes and variable floor plans adapted to the usage cycle. There are two, three or five apartments per floor. Parapets with only 40 cm could be enforced contrary to existing guidelines. The 16 floors are stacked as staggered individual elements. Hierl explains: “Each floor rotates and has a different floor plan. In terms of construction, this involves a certain amount of effort. The first is the diagonal that stretches the body, and the second is the double helix. This turning around its own axis creates optically more verticality. "
